Dammam is a port city in eastern Saudi Arabia. It is the capital of the province of Ash-Sharqiyya (Eastern Province) and an important location for the Saudi oil industry. Most of the Saudi oil reserves are located in the province.
In the early 1980s, Dammam was still a city in its own right. However, the cities of al-Chubar (Al Khobar) and Dhahran grew so close that the three cities merged to form one city called Dammam Area. Each of the three cities retained its own character and administrative authorities.
