It is out: World Business Outlook Spring 2025

The latest edition of the World Business Outlook (WBO) Spring 2025 was published along the start of the AHK World Conference 2025 in Berlin – the largest network meeting of the German Chambers of Commerce Abroad (AHKs) from 150 locations in 93 countries worldwide.

From 13 to 15 May, around 900 representatives from business and politics will discuss global challenges and their impact on German companies. The focus is on international dialogue, the search for viable solutions and new impetus for cooperation in an increasingly fragmented global economy.

AHK World Business Outlook Fall 2024

The AHK World Business Outlook is based on a regular DIHK survey of the member companies of the German Chambers of Commerce Abroad, delegations and representative offices (AHKs). In fall 2024, it collected feedback from 3,500 German companies, branches and subsidiaries worldwide as well as companies with close ties to Germany. The survey was conducted from 23 September to 16 October 2024.

Evaluation in the local region

The region - Africa, Near and Middle East - has experienced one of the most positive developments regarding its economic position in recent years. 60% of companies expect that economic development will improve over the next 12 months. Compared to the World Business Outlook in Spring 2024, the number of companies that expect a positive economic outlook have doubled.

AHK World Business Outlook Spring 2024

From the perspective of German companies at their international locations, the global economy will develop somewhat more dynamically overall in the coming twelve months than recently. In spring 2024, the around 4,300 companies surveyed by the AHKs worldwide are much more optimistic about economic development than in fall 2023.

Evaluation in the local region

There are significant divergences between the regions in terms of expected economic development. Positive assessments predominate in most of the world.

German companies in the MENA region are currently the most confident about local economic development worldwide. The balance of better and worse expectations has risen to 37 points (balance 43 points after previously six points, long-term average 19 points), despite the ongoing conflict in the region and the associated uncertainty about the economic impact.

While companies in Saudi Arabia (balance 58 points) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE, balance 33 points) continue to expect good economic development with slight deductions compared to the previous survey, expectations have improved compared to the previous survey, particularly in Morocco (balance 52 points) due to stable consumption and tourism and Egypt (balance 45 points). Due to some easing of last year's liquidity crisis, the Egyptian economy is stabilizing again.

Methodology WBO

The AHK World Business Outlook is based on a regular DIHK survey of the member companies of the German Chambers of Commerce Abroad, delegations and representative offices (AHKs).

It collects feedback from German companies, branches and subsidiaries worldwide as well as companies with close ties to Germany - companies  from the industry and construction sector, service sector and further ones are trading companies. Smaller companies with fewer than 100 employees, companies employ 100 to 1,000 employees, large companies with more than 1,000 employees worldwide, subsidiaries/branches of German companies -  local or (non-German) international companies without a branch in Germany or local or (non-German) international companies with a branch in Germany.

The results for the continental regions and the global value are weighted. The basis for the weighting of an individual country is the average gross domestic product (GDP) in US dollars. The questions on the business situation, expectations, economic activity, investments and employment are weighted accordingly.
