The diversification of the Saudi Arabian economy opens up great opportunities for German companies to cooperate. For example, the German mechanical engineering industry is an important partner in the expansion of the manufacturing industry.
German machine deliveries increased by 24 percent in 2022 and 2023 respectively. In the 1st half of 2024, there was an increase of 7 percent. The full-year value could rise to over 1.5 billion euros. One of the main goals of the "Vision 2030" development plan is to reduce dependence on the oil sector.
In addition to the expansion of the manufacturing industries, the focus is primarily on services. In contrast to the previously dominant, very capital-intensive oil industry, many new jobs are being created for the young local population in the service industry. Examples are the rapidly expanding leisure and tourism sector and the logistics industry.
The restructuring of the country towards climate neutrality could give the economy important impetus. Saudi Arabia wants to achieve the "net zero" target by 2060, but at the same time keep its oil production and exports at a high level. The increased use of renewable energies is intended to contribute to climate neutrality. However, there is greater interest in CCUS technologies (Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage). By 2035, a CCUS capacity of 44 million tonnes of CO₂ per year is to be achieved.
The interest of foreign companies in Saudi Arabia has increased noticeably in recent years. A major reason for this is the numerous megaprojects that have been announced or have already begun. Most projects are financed entirely or substantially by the state Public Investment Fund (PIF). The more positive assessment of the Saudi Arabian market is also due to some improvements in the legal and administrative framework. In addition, the partial modernization of the very conservative Islamic social order has contributed to an image improvement.
