Information on the target market
Saudi Arabia is driving forward the modernization and diversification of the energy sector as part of Saudi Vision 2030. The focus here is on renewable energies and climate neutrality.
The background to this is that Saudi Arabia wants to achieve climate neutrality by 2060, with 50% of its energy requirements coming from renewable energies by 2030. The megaprojects planned as part of Vision 2030, such as NEOM, Red Sea Global and Amaala, play a central role in this, as they are based entirely on climate-neutral energy infrastructures and are funded by the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP). The King Salman Energy Park (SPARK) also plays an important role and will provide a comprehensive infrastructure for the energy sector.
Saudi Arabia is investing heavily in the modernization and expansion of its existing energy infrastructure in order to meet the sharp rise in electricity consumption (+100% between 2008 and 2018). In particular, decentralized, renewable energy feed-in and the expansion of smart grids and electricity storage technologies are being driven forward.
This includes the Red Sea Microgrid, the world's largest solar-based microgrid with a 400 MW PV system and a 1.3 GWh storage system, as well as the high-voltage smart grid developed by ENOWA in NEOM. The smart grid is a pioneering sector and is growing by 15% annually. The country is also expanding its transnational network to facilitate energy exports. For example, a 3 GW HVDC line to Egypt is due to go into operation in 2025, as is a connection to Jordan, which will increase the operating efficiency of both countries.
The Saudi energy market is characterised by dynamic competition. In addition to the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) as the main player in power generation, transmission and distribution, the market is characterised by local companies such as ACWA Power and Aramco Power, which in turn work closely with international players.
The expansion of the energy infrastructure offers German companies numerous opportunities to position themselves in the Saudi market with corresponding solution concepts. After China and India, Germany is the country with the most SEC-qualified suppliers for distribution network materials. The products include transformers, fault indicators, heat-shrink tubing and cables. In addition, German technologies are in demand in the areas of smart grid integration, smart electricity meters, grid planning, intelligent energy storage systems and energy management.
