Last week, the GESALO had the pleasure of welcoming eight innovative German companies on the topic of Energy infrastructure with a focus on decentralized smart grids and transnational grid interconnections in Saudi Arabia together with Renewables Academy (RENAC) AG to Riyadh and Dammam, Saudi Arabia. The export initiative is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

Saudi Arabia is undergoing a historic transformation in its energy sector, moving beyond its traditional oil-based economy toward a more diversified, sustainable, and resilient energy future. As part of Vision 2030, a key pillar of this transformation is the modernization of energy infrastructure — with a growing emphasis on decentralized smart grids and transnational grid interconnections.

Riyadh:

In Riyadh, our delegation engaged in high-level meetings with government entities and private sector companies from the Saudi electricity sector including the Ministry of Energy (MOE), ACWA Power, Red Sea Global, Alfanar Projects, Abunayyan Holding Company, ENOWA (NEOM) and Sterling & Wilson.

Our Executive Business Roundtable brought together senior leaders from across the energy sector to exchange real-world experiences in tackling some of the industry's biggest challenges. Discussions focused on overcoming project hurdles, accelerating local supply chain development, and building long-term operational resilience. Collaboration like this is key to driving sustainable infrastructure growth aligned with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.

Dammam:

The journey continued to Dammam, featuring meetings at the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu as well as at Olayan Descon, a leading Integrated Engineering and Industrial Services Company in Saudi Arabia.

A visit to Larsen & Toubro’s facilities offered our delegates a valuable behind-the-scenes look at the supply chain processes that support large-scale energy projects in the Kingdom. As one of the region’s leading contractors for power and renewable energy infrastructure, Larsen & Toubro plays an important role in Saudi Arabia’s energy sector development.

Participants gained valuable insights into the strategic development of micro grid solutions and the expansion of renewable energies (RE) in the Kingdom. Project developers and partners shared practical advice on key success factors, their specific needs, and preferred forms of cooperation. A roundtable with German-speaking experts on the ground provided concrete recommendations and guidance for a potential market entry.
