  • News

As part of the Saudi German Energy Dialogue of the German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy, the GESALO co-organised a technical workshop on decarbonization pathways for the steel and cement sectors at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals - KFUPM, together with the Center for Sustainable Energy Systems and H2-diplo - Decarbonization Diplomacy.

The event brought together stakeholders from academia, policymakers, and leading companies from Saudi Arabia’s steel and cement industries - highlighting the growing importance of practical solutions for hard-to-abate sectors. A key highlight of this workshop was the presentation of a comprehensive benchmarking study, presented by Mr. Nabil Dar (Lahmeyer International GmbH).

During a panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Saad Dahlawi (NCECKSA, National Center for Environmental Compliance), industry experts Engr. Ammar Chaban. (Al Rashed Cement Group), Hakeem Dowla (Al-Ittefaq Steel), Sid Ahmed Hamdani, MBA (King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center - KAPSARC), Rami Abdulall (TÜV Rheinland Group), Mr. Nabil Dar (Lahmeyer International GmbH) and Muhammad Asif (King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals - KFUPM) were discussing their perspectives and challenges.

A central takeaway: while decarbonization is a strategic priority, its implementation remains challenging in practice. It comes at higher cost, and beyond strategies and roadmaps, industries require the right incentives and enabling frameworks to drive real change.

The workshop underlined the role of the Energy Dialogue as a platform for bringing together experts with different perspectives.

We thank all partners, especially Dr. Ridha Ben Mansour and Dr, as well as all participants, for their valuable contributions.
