Update on the implementation of the second and third phase of plastic regulation of SASO

28/06/2019

The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) has postponed the implementation of the second and third phase of regulation for oxo-biodegradable plastic packaging to 01.04.2020. The reason for the shift could be the EU's decision of 05.06.19 to ban the use of oxo-biodegradable plastic.

According to the EU, this type of plastic can not be recycled adequately and contributes to environmental pollution. The EU has recently communicated this information to the Saudi Arabian Government in the form of a verbal note, together with the result of a European study on this issue.

In addition, it is currently awaiting the outcome of a study on the desirability of using oxo-biodegradable plastic, which SASO has commissioned and is expected to release by the end of June. The result of the study could significantly influence the decision of SASO. We will inform you as soon as possible about further changes.
