Newsletter April 2022

Dear Partners and Friends of the German Business Community,

The Energy and Healthcare sectors were the focus of the visit of the Secretary of State from the Bavarian Ministry of Economy, H.E. Roland Weigert, end of March to Riyadh. The delegation saw the transforming economy and could identify cooperation possibilities between Bavaria and the Kingdom.

The strong commitment to the diversification of the Energy sector was already witnessed earlier during the Saudi German Energy Day in Riad on February 27th with high-ranking representatives from industry and government institutions attending. The certification, transportation and off-taking of the hydrogen market was discussed in several sessions among experts.

The increasing interest in the region was also evident during the Big 5 Trade Show in Riad, end of March. More than 30 exhibitors from Germany were showcasing their technology and commitment to the Saudi market. The GESALO Team organized a market overview briefing for the exhibitors together with the German Embassy. The upcoming BAUMA trade fair in Munich in October is again another opportunity to meet for the construction sector. The GESALO Trade Fair team is currently reaching out to potential visitors and exhibitors to facilitate bookings.

Altogether, we do see that the trade fair sector is picking up again driven also by an increasing interest from the Saudi side. Please find an overview of the upcoming Trade Fairs in Germany in this newsletter.

I’m very pleased that we could win Dussmann for a partnership promoting female leadership in the Kingdom.  We will jointly offer an Executive Course for Saudi Female Engineers starting in June in Riyadh. The course is now open for applications and you can find more information in this newsletter.

We are looking forward to welcoming you to our next events in June, supported by the Federal German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action: The Webinar on the Leisure and Event Industry and the Export Initiative Biogenic Waste Management.

Last but not least we would like highlight the launch of our new digital platform ForSA - business networking made easy!

We wish you all the best for the remaining Holy Month of Ramadan and the upcoming Eid Holiday.

Enjoy reading the Newsletter!

April 20, 2022

Three years since the new Saudi Competition Law and its Executive Regulations entering into force, we have seen two guidelines and increased enforcement of the regime including fining of domestic and foreign companies for infringement. Furthermore, in June 2021 Kuwait followed the example of Saudi Arabia and introduced turnover thresholds for its merger control regime. Nicolas Bremer will provide an update on regulatory reforms and practical experience with the new regimes.
