Information on the target market
Saudi Arabia is currently pushing ahead with the expansion of renewable energies: Mega projects such as the Red Sea Project and Neom require the planning and construction of partly completely new power grids.
In November 2022, the Saudi Arabian Water & Electricity Regulatory Authority (WERA) approved a new regulatory framework for the operation of renewable energy systems that are primarily used for self-supply. The regulations apply to systems with a capacity of more than 1 kilowatt. Both grid-connected systems and off-grid systems are covered. This regulation opens new business opportunities for German manufacturers of smart meters and feed-in solutions.
The transnational expansion of electricity grids is also progressing. In October 2021, Egypt and Saudi Arabia signed construction contracts for a cross-border electricity connection. The contractually specified power line is expected to reach its final expansion stage in 2025 and have a capacity (generation or transmission capacity) of 3 gigawatts. Another electricity interconnection project between Saudi Arabia and Jordan is expected to be commissioned in the second half of 2025. In 2020, both countries signed a memorandum of understanding to expand the 164 km (about 101.9 mi) long connection between Qurrayat in Saudi Arabia and Amman in Jordan.
The Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) has signed two contracts worth a total of 720 million dollars with a Chinese and a Saudi company at the end of 2022 for a project to install 60,000 smart devices in the Kingdom's electricity distribution network. The project will connect the country's distribution network with modern control centers over the next two years and support the SEC's strategy to automate and develop the electricity grids. It is important that German SMEs engage with Saudi Arabia as soon as possible so that German products and solutions can establish themselves as standard applications.
Due to the increased importance of personal relationships in the Arab business world, physical business trips offer an efficient insight into the market for German companies and enable them to establish contacts with local institutions and companies.
